Are you out to find an awesome deal at your local GoodWill or other thrift store? I often shop there for photography props, vintage items and so much more!!
Here are some tips and tricks to always remember.
Going into a thrift store packed with racks of clothing and shelves filled with all kinds of trinkets and goodies can be overwhelming and a bit scary.
Just remember shopping at a thrift store takes time. Shopping at a thrift store isn’t like going into your local department store, you have to take the time to search though the shelves and racks to find those great pieces. Don’t expect to be in and out in 10 minutes. Make sure you have the time to really dig though everything. Be sure to browse the whole store you just never know where that amazing find is hidden.
Become friendly with the staff. The staff are the ones taking in and going though the donations. They usually have a pretty good idea of the items they have. They may even be able to get you some tips on what days are the best to stop by that particular store. Remember they know what days they stock the shelves. 😉
Don’t be afraid to fix something. Just because a shirt is missing a button or two don’t rule it out. If it’s the right style and fit for you, think about finding some great buttons to sew onto it. Also if it is a bit to big think about taking it into a tailor to be fixed for a relatively small fee. The same goes for furniture. If you find a piece of furniture that has great bones, consider how you could fix it up. Many times all it takes is a good sanding, a coat of paint or stain, some new hardware and you can make an old piece look as good as new. Keep this same idea in mind for picture frames, vases and lamps.
Make sure you really look at the items. Thrift stores don’t often accept returns. You want to be sure the items are of good quality and if they are damaged in any way they would be worth the cost of the repair in the end.
When you get home, wash what you buy. Never wear a piece of thrift store clothing or curl up in a thrift store blanket with out washing it first. Furniture and other household items and kitchenware should be given a good scrub down a well.
Don’t miss out on off season items. Just because it isn’t Christmas doesn’t mean you won’t find some awesome Christmas items at the thrift store. Just remember don’t buy it if you won’t ever use it. Do not buy it just because its a great price, if you won’t use it then its just a waste of money.
Be sure not to get to carried away. Thrift store shopping can all to quickly turn into hoarding. Remember the one item in, one item out rule.
If there is more then one thrift store near you remember location is key. A thrift store on the nicer side of town will have different types of items than ones in different locations throughout the city.
Bring a set amount of cash. Most thrift stores will not accept credit cards but even if they do, you don’t want to get yourself into trouble by spending more than you can really afford. You might even be able to haggle for a better price if you have cash.
Did you know you can also shop online at Goodwill? Its true Goodwill now has online shopping! Check it out! Their site has tons of categories and spot to search for items as well.
Sometimes is a good idea to switch things up and check out the thrift stores on different days and at different times. Many stores like Goodwill have different discounts on different days.
Be sure to dress to shop. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Its always best to wear form fitting clothing like leggings and a t shirt in case you need to try something on. Not all thrift stores have dressing rooms so you want to be prepared.
If you think there is a possibility you may buy a bigger item take a long a tape measure so you can be sure the item will fit in your vehicle.
If there is something electronic you see that you want do not be afraid to ask a staff member if you can plug it in to make sure it works.
Just go in with an open mind and you may find a wonderful treasure waiting for you!
